Who is Joan Ricardo Roa Mora?

Portrait of Joan Ricardo Roa Mora

Joan Ricardo Roa Mora grew up between two worlds: in Cali with his beloved grandparents, and in a modest neighborhood of Bogotá with his parents, forging friendships there that he still treasures today.

At 15, he earned the second-highest ICFES score in his school—always passionate about learning, if occasionally a bit restless in class.

At 16, he joined the Colombian Air Force, where he spent several years in rigorous training: flying different aircraft, handling live ammunition on land and in the air, and forging an unbreakable bond with his homeland, which he swore to defend for life.

By 18, Joan was dual-certified as an Air Traffic Controller and an intelligence operative—think James Bond, but with a Colombian accent.

At 22, convinced that true societal change begins with justice, he embarked on a Law degree—simultaneously working for the Colombian government on human-rights policies. There, he combined legal insight with software skills, scripting small tools that accelerated casework and improved service to citizens.

In 2017, driven by curiosity, Joan dove into self-taught programming, building web projects in Python—even a text-based Bingo game that friends swear was more fun than any GUI version.

By 2021, he formalized his tech journey as a Software Engineering student, complementing his autodidactic drive with solid engineering foundations.

In 2023, he launched Benkos AI, a web app that processed hundreds of thousands of pages of conflict-related data—and empowered government decision-makers with fast, accurate analysis via AI-powered classification.

And in 2024, he unveiled Boris AI, a system for the Colombian Superintendence of Public Services that automates appeal-response drafting—slashing turnaround times and proving that emerging technologies can transform even the most traditional professions.
